A CONFUSION OF PRINCES
A Confusion Of Princes is a sci-fi novel I was tasked to adapt as part of my second year on the TV and Film Set design course at USW. We were tasked with designing and visualising a location from the book as if it were to be made into a set for a feature film adaption.
The location I chose to design I've named the Puzzle House. It's a building situated within a large simulated jungle full of ravenous creatures that the protagonist needs to survive. This building is the only shelter available to survive the horrors of the night. In the book the building has a puzzle he needs to solve to enter. I began to wonder if the building itself was the puzzle, with the main character needing to rotate the walls psychically to enter it.
This was a really fun and unique project with so many moving elements, calculating how the building could realistically move. The building quite literally folds up in the book in the morning, meaning that the protagonist needs to escape before he gets crushed. It then resumes its form at night so our hero can solve the puzzle once again. This part of the story got me thinking about origami architecture and folding. This also matched the brutalist style I had chosen for the world of A Confusion Of Princes. The majority of the origami building above would be added in CGI with the physical set cutting of just after the overhang
