LIMINAL

This was a graduate short film I designed where a set and miniature were needed. The story is entirely set within this confined shuttle where the astronaut is tasked with researching black holes. I was part of a 3 person art department where I was head of design, working with everyone to create this little world within a spacecraft. We were able to source 11 free flats from Set-aside Storage in oxfordshire, thanks to production designer Richard Drew, which really helped expand the space.

The process of set design went through many changes due to pacing, action, camera, lighting and design itself. The interior space also needed to make sense alongside the exterior ship

As this was a student film I was limited in what was possible, so the design of the ship worked around elements we already had, notably the chair which was actually a barbers chair.

I ensured to design the exterior in conjunction with the interior so I could keep every element in mind. It was a really valuable exercise to design an interior to match an exterior design.

As this was a short film I made the exterior model predominantly by scrap building, with the model being painted by one of my fellow designers

BEYOND HUMAN

This was a short film I designed as part of a 4 person art department. We focused mainly on the design of the set itself with the director needing a teenage bedroom designed and built along with an en-suite bathroom.

We managed to collect a lot of second hand furniture and doors from Facebook market place and chose to to go for a contrasting colour pallet and tone sticking to cool colours with the walls and most of the graphics, and using wooden items to add a warmer contrast. As this was a super hero film, we decided to make and design our own super hero's which we made by taking real action figures and remaking them. We then used the photos of the figures to make posters which we used to dress the set.
