PERDIDO ST. STATION

Perdido St Station is a fantasy novel I chose to adapt into a feature film design creating concept visuals, mood boards, technical drawings, digital model and physical model. The story follows a group of characters as they try to purge the metropolis of New New Crobuzon of creatures called slake moths. Each concept depicts a moment in the story from the very beginning to the end with the station featuring in all of them. As it happens the station is the very location I decided to design with the lower south wing being the part I designed as a set.

The design of the station went through many different layouts as I needed to think in terms of urban planning and also how this location explains the kind of world these characters are living in. I wanted to create a location that felt like a hub of a large city with tracks that could realistically crisscross through the metropolis. The tight curved platforms came from the idea that the train cars could act much more like  roller coaster cars being very rough, reflecting the harsh and dangerous environment of the city. The challenge was, how to create one location that could house metro tracks, shops, office blocks, a skyway and housing.

The architectural style was based on art nouveau but swaying more towards the insectile forms and shapes to create a more alien other worldly environment taking inspiration from insect eyes, flies wings and segmented bodies like woodlice and centipedes.
